READ:  Psalm 51

REFLECT:  Why did David offer this prayer?

RESPONDLocate one Biblical example of someone who lost, or simply did not get what they wanted.  How did this turn out as a blessing?

"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me."

  1. The obvious example has to be Job. Job had everything, but he was also humble. So when God uprooted his life and left him broken I doubt he was thinking, "boy, this is exactly what I wanted." Just to add to the dilemma, his friends had to come to him and let him 'know' that it was his fault any of it was happening. Job may have been humble but he wasn't so modest that he wouldn't tell them off in the end. Then this poor guy, who has been smashed by everything in his life, hears from God who calls him out, "This far you may come, but no farther, and here your poured waves must stop!" However, in the end God took his humility and turned it into a massive blessing.

  2. I have a biblical example, that is a bit abstract, but which came to me, right the way, I read your instructions.

Judas, who betrayed Jesus Christ, wanted appreciation and "safety" of the Romans and the priests, for the time "after" Jesus. All he got, was the reputation of being the one, who betrayed Jesus Christ, for all time and a sudden death.
But after all, he was the one, who helped to fulfill god's word, and therefore helped us, to be our sins taken away in the face of god. THANK YOU JUDAS ISKARIOT THE BETRAYER!

  3. David was constantly running from Saul, always fearing for his life. He faced many defeats and all of this was in God's mighty plan to make him into the man who would rule over all of Israel as His anointed.

  4. Brother Willie spoke on October 26, 2003 about this passage...sheep's legs were broken and that happens to us sometimes...verse 8....David had committed adultery with Bathsheba...sometimes I wonder about Christ...He asked God to take the cross from Him, but it wasn't His will...it was God's will...so, not only was Christ blessed, but mankine was blessed!...the song that has the phrase "a broken and contrite heart" reminds me of this 51st Psalm
