Commit this passage to memory: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14)

The reality Sam is that your past is of who you are. You can’t change it, it’s already happened, so you have to accept whatever happened … The future though is in your hands and you have the ability to make choices that can better or hinder yourself.
Often times, I have asked myself, why do I do this or why do I do that? What I have come to learn is that my past determines the choices I make in the future. If something unacceptable to you has happened in your past, you must realize that it influences your choices, for better or worse. But realizing this allows you to make wise choices with a better understanding of the motivating factors.
