Spiritual WOD - 2/6/2012

Define "self-discipline."  Why, and how, is it important in our everyday lives?

“If I want to be great I have to win the victory over myself... self-discipline.” (Harry S. Truman)

"...make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control..." (2 Peter 1:5-6)

  1. Self-Discipline: the ability to control or put into submission ones thoughts, emotions, and physical desires.

Self-Discipline is important b/c as Christians our flesh wants things of this world, but by living a self-disciplined life by the power of the Holy Spirit we are more than conquers in every area of our lives. Romans 8:5-6

In general it is important for every aspect of our lives to be under control of ourselves, so were not driven by emotions and desires that are temporary.

  2. Johnny, I like your definition a lot.

I think self discipline is important to our lives as Christians and athletes because it allows us to have the fortitude to continue on, even when not in the best conditions. Self Discipline is being able to get that workout in, get to work on time, or do what is necessary for our family even though we may not feel up to it. It is essential in our lives to follow Christ closer and better ourselves in Faith and everything else.

  3. Both wonderful definitions! I also feel the Self-Discipline is not giving in to temptation. As we live in the flesh, temptation is everywhere and we gain self-discipline through HIM to resist.
